In the Victorian suburb of Keysborough, in 1979, the beginnings of Equinade came to be in the stable sheds of a young Australian Farrier, Alan Cunningham. Alan began to make an all natural hoof grease to care for the horses he treated. The hoof grease quickly gained popularity due to its effectiveness. Then with the help of his father, Wal (pictured), he was able to distribute his famous hoof grease to friends, family and later to horse trainers. Wal, who was also a keen horseman, continued to develop unique, effective products that quickly became a part of the Equinade premium quality range.
When Wal reached retirement age, he sold the company to passionate horse rider, Rob Allen. Rob was a frequent customer of Wal's, stopping in regularly to buy Hoof Grease for his horses. When he discovered that Wal would be retiring and shutting up shop, Rob offered to buy the business. Rob continued to grow the Equinade range to such an extent that it required 3 upsizings in factory plants to keep up with the demands of growth. During this period, Rob focused on ensuring that each Equinade product was ideal for the harsh Australian conditions that horses may endure. He also focused on being able to source almost exclusively Australian ingredients.
When Rob reached retirement age, and decided to hand over the reins, he did not have to look far. Today the tradition of Equinade continues to thrive under the guidance of Janine, Rob’s daughter. Janine was responsible for the addition of the Pooches n Cream range, which are based on the premium Equinade products you know and love, but are especially formulated to be gentle for your dog, cat or other small animals.
More than 40 years after it’s humble beginnings, Equinade remains proudly 100% Australian made and owned, and family run. The current Equinade factory is located in Carrum Downs, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The large factory is now a busy manufacturing plant, distributing your favourite premium quality products Australia wide.
